Pakistan on Saturday said that the $ 50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project is for the purpose of development and it aims at the well being of the people of that region. Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman said, ” CPEC is a development and connectivity project for the betterment of the people in the region and beyond.” Foreign Office spokesman said this in response to a query regarding US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis’ statement on CPEC. According to PTI, Mattis in his statement had said that the Belt and Road Initiative “also goes through the disputed territory and that in itself shows the vulnerability of trying to establish that sort of a dictate”.
China too rejected the comments made by the Trump administration around the CPEC saying that One Belt, One Road (OBOR) is an initiative which is not directed against third parties, ANI reported. The Express Tribune quoted the Chinese Foreign Ministry saying, ” We have repeatedly said that the CPEC is an economic cooperation initiative that is not directed against third parties and has nothing to do with territorial sovereignty disputes and does not affect China’s principled stance on the Kashmir issue.”
China had come up with the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative in the year 2013. The project mainly seeks to enable a 21st century “Silk Route” which will comprise of a more modified overland and maritime access routes. The project also aims to upgrade the present transport and communication system of both the countries and seeks to reap the dividends from it.
